Low Vision Centre

Coming to terms with sight loss is not easy. For many people, being told they have a sight problem causes a range of different emotions.  There are feelings of panic, anger, frustration, loss of confidence and fear of losing independence.

The Low Vision Centre exists to help, support and give information that will increase independence and self-confidence. The team works with individuals to enable them to get the help they need by looking at their everyday needs and difficulties.

What we offer

  • A place where emotional and practical support is given
  • Access to benefits advice
  • Specialist equipment including magnifiers and electronic reading aids
  • Information sessions
  • Access to audio services
  • Support groups for those with macular degeneration and those whose sight has been affected by a stroke

ECLO Service

There is also an important link with the Eye Clinic at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust through the Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO).

The ECLO plays a key role, offering support to patients and providing a link between ophthalmic services and N-Vision’s range of services.

The Centre’s services are available to anyone with reduced vision including their families and carers and professionals who need further information regarding sight loss.

For more information and to discuss any aspect of sight loss please call 01253 362696 or email info@nvision-nw.co.uk

Low Vision Assessment

If your sight cannot be improved by medical treatment or prescription glasses, our assessment will identify the best way of improving your functional vision.

This could be achieved by the use of magnifiers, TV glasses, anti-glare glasses and distance aids. We will also look at other techniques to help you cope with low vision.

Remember, it is also important to keep up-to-date with your eye checks at your local Opticians.

Our Low Vision Practitioners will discuss the implications of poor sight with you. The practitioner will assess your vision and suggest ways to improve your ability to read, write and undertake other activities or tasks you may be having difficulty with.

You will have the opportunity to try a wide range of visual aids. If any of the aids are of some help to you, they will be loaned to you for use at home. You will be shown how to use them and be shown certain techniques.

If you prefer, a relative or friend may sit in with you during the assessment. We are happy to discuss areas of concern with you and those close to you.

We can also provide advice about other services which may be beneficial to you.

You must bring your prescription glasses, even if they are of little use to you, any aids you use and examples of tasks you find difficult.

This could be books, music, newspapers, sewing or knitting etc.

This service is funded by our two Clinical Commissioning Groups, Blackpool CCG, and Fylde and Wyre CCG (NHS) and is free of charge to you.

Any Low Vision aids prescribed to you will be on a permanent, loan basis.

If your GP is based in Blackpool, Fylde, or Wyre, you can access the service.
