Volunteering
Volunteers give their time freely for the benefit of other people, without being paid. The involvement and commitment of our volunteers is vital to the support we are able to offer to those using our services.
Make a difference
Volunteers are always needed! If you are self-motivated, reliable, caring and enjoy working with people, we need enthusiastic individuals to help us with our busy activities, events calendar and high-quality services. This can be as a regular commitment or as little as a couple of hours per week.
N-Vision supports local people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities to increase their independence, achieve their dreams and reach their goals.
People volunteer for a variety of reasons:
- They want to gain new skills and experience
- Meeting new people and being part of a team
- They want to give something back to the community or a local charity
- They wish to further a personal interest or passion
- To gain valuable work experience to add to their CV
- To acquire training and qualifications from the organisation as part of their personal development plan
It depends on the volunteer role.
As a volunteer, you agree how much time you are prepared to give. This will help us determine which opportunities might be suitable for you.
If your circumstances change, we always try to accommodate these.
Volunteers will be expected to:
- Always treat N-Vision staff, clients, visitors, customers and fellow volunteers with respect, consideration and appreciation
- Be professional whenever and wherever you represent N-Vision
- Act in a way that does not discriminate or exclude anyone
- Give as much notice as possible if you are unable to help
- Ask if you are unsure about anything relating to the organisation or your role
- Follow N-Vision’s policies and procedures
- We will introduce you to the organisation by means of an induction when your role starts
- We will treat you with respect, consideration and appreciation
- We will ensure you are clear about your role and responsibilities within the organisation
- We will provide training, appropriate to the requirements of your role
- We will provide a safe environment wherever you volunteer
You will be required to undertake a basic, standard or enhanced background check through a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) – depending on where you are placed within the organisation.
We will need you to provide us with two references and complete a series of induction training sessions before you can start with us.
You can apply to become a volunteer without any initial training. You may be required to undertake some training relevant to the department or role you apply for.
Volunteering can boost your career prospects. It shows that you care about your community and have taken a proactive step towards developing and applying your skills. You can also develop your organisational, teamwork and problem solving skills.
Whether you are applying for your first job, considering a career change or looking to enhance a university application, volunteering experience may just set you above the rest of the competition.
It doesn’t matter what skills you have or how old you are – there is most likely a role available for you. We encourage people from all walks of life to join our charity organisation.
You might have some spare time that works around your current job, or you might be retired with lots of skills and experiences to share.
You might be a student looking to gain experience, or a busy parent who is able to spare a few hours per week.
Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
You are not paid for your time as a volunteer, but you may receive money to cover certain expenses.
This is usually limited to food, drink, travel or any equipment you need to purchase.

Available Voluntary roles
To combat loneliness and isolation, we have a number of volunteers who visit clients in their local area for an hour on a regular basis for a coffee and a friendly chat.
This service is managed by Jo Jackson. Jo would liaise with you and the client, ensuring the relationship is a good fit for both parties.
If you would like something on a regular basis, our care home are always looking for volunteers to come in and support the residents.
You can bring an activity, read to them or just have a chat.
We have two charity shops in Blackpool.
The shops need volunteers who can help on the shop floor and assist customers.
As well as visiting our clients in their homes, we also host various social clubs on a weekly basis.
As a volunteer you would help facilitate our clubs with the support of team leader Bailey, who organises all the social activities here.
Due to reduced or no sight, our clients are unable to read their own newspapers or magazines so we do that for them!
Volunteers come in and read out a selection of materials in our very own recording studio, they are then transferred onto a memory stick and sent to our clients.
The Trustees of N-Vision are individuals who voluntarily give their time, energy and skills to ensure that the organisation achieves its’ Purpose and Values in supporting people living with sight loss.
They are expected to actively participate in four Board meetings per year and support the efficient use of resources, effective management, compliance with regulatory standards and be involved in the strategic direction of N-Vision.
